How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin (pigment) inside your hair follicles. A focused beam of light passes safely through the skin and is absorbed by the follicle, creating heat that disrupts its ability to regrow hair while leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed. This process is known as selective photothermolysis.

Because hair grows in cycles, the laser is only effective on follicles in the anagen (active growth) phase. Not all hairs are in this phase at the same time, which is why a course of treatments is essential for long-term results.

  • Face treatments: every 4-6 weeks
  • Body treatments: every 6-8 weeks
  • Typical course: 6-8 sessions for significant, lasting reduction
  • Results: hair begins to shed gradually over 7–21 days after each session, with smoother, lower-maintenance skin developing over time

Cynosure Elite iQ: Dual-Wavelength Advantage

The Elite iQ system features two complementary laser wavelengths, allowing us to customise treatment for every skin tone and hair type safely and effectively.

The Alexandrite wavelength is considered the gold standard for laser hair removal on lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick types I–III). This shorter wavelength is readily absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle, making it exceptionally effective for:
  • Fair to medium skin tones with good contrast between skin and hair colour
  • Fine to medium hair texture
  • Faster treatment times due to high melanin absorption
  • Excellent results on brown and black hair
The Alexandrite laser delivers precise energy directly to the follicle while the shorter wavelength ensures minimal scatter, resulting in efficient hair destruction with fewer sessions needed for lighter-skinned clients.
The Nd:YAG wavelength is specifically designed for darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick types IV–VI) and offers critical safety advantages:
  • Deeper penetration - The longer wavelength travels through the epidermis (skin surface) with minimal absorption, reaching the hair follicle at the dermal level
  • Bypasses surface pigment - Because it's less absorbed by melanin in the skin itself, it dramatically reduces the risk of burns, hyperpigmentation, or hypopigmentation on darker skin
  • Safer for tanned skin - Ideal for clients with naturally darker complexions or those with recent sun exposure
  • Effective on coarse hair - Particularly successful on thick, dense hair growth common in hormonal conditions like PCOS
  • The Nd:YAG wavelength has revolutionised laser hair removal for darker skin tones, making treatments that were once risky or impossible now safe and effective.

The Skintel sensor is the first FDA-cleared melanin reader and represents a major advancement in laser safety and customisation: What it does:
  • The device takes an objective measurement of melanin concentration in your skin. Rather than relying on visual assessment or the traditional Fitzpatrick scale alone, Skintel provides a precise numerical melanin index.
  Why it matters:
  • Eliminates guesswork - No more estimating skin type by eye or asking "have you been in the sun?"
  • Personalised settings - The system automatically recommends optimal laser parameters (wavelength, energy level, pulse duration) based on your exact melanin reading
  • Tracks changes - Melanin levels can fluctuate due to sun exposure, tanning, or natural variation; Skintel detects these changes and adjusts treatment settings accordingly
  • Enhanced safety - Reduces risk of under-treatment (ineffective results) or over-treatment (burns, pigmentation changes)
  • Consistent results - Ensures every session is optimised for your skin at that moment in time
  How it works:
  • Your practitioner places the Skintel sensor against your skin. Within seconds, it provides a melanin measurement that guides wavelength selection and energy settings. For example, if your reading indicates higher melanin, the system may recommend the Nd:YAG wavelength at adjusted parameters to ensure safe, effective treatment.

This combination of dual wavelengths and intelligent melanin sensing makes the Elite iQ one of the most versatile and safe laser hair removal systems available, suitable for every skin tone and hair type.

Key Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal offers more than just aesthetic improvement. Patients often choose this treatment at Omniya Clinic for the following reasons:

  • Long-term hair reduction: A full course can deliver up to 80-90% permanent reduction, with only occasional maintenance required. Maintenance is individual, and depends on the area treated.
  • Elimination of ingrown hairs: By targeting the follicle directly, laser hair removal reduces the risk of regrowth that causes irritation and ingrown hairs, including pseudofolliculitis barbae.
  • Time and cost efficiency: Compared with the lifetime expense of razors or waxing – often estimated between £7,000 and £17,000 – laser hair removal represents a more efficient long-term solution.
  • Improved skin quality: Reduced irritation from shaving or waxing means smoother, clearer skin without stubble shadow or razor rash.
  • Greater confidence and convenience: With long-lasting results, patients enjoy the reassurance of being treatment-ready at all times, without the need for frequent hair removal routines.

Special Considerations

Darker Skin Tones

Elite IQ’s Nd:YAG wavelength penetrates deeper, bypassing epidermal pigment and making it safe for Fitzpatrick IV–VI. The Skintel reader ensures optimal settings.

PCOS & Hormonal Hair Growth

Laser is particularly effective for the dense, coarse hair often caused by hormonal conditions. Expect a slightly higher session count and ongoing maintenance to keep results.

Tattoos & Moles

We never laser directly over a tattoo or raised mole. During treatment we cover tattoos with a medical dressing or work around them to prevent pigment reaction.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Laser hair removal is not performed during pregnancy and usually deferred until after breastfeeding. We can plan your schedule around these life stages.

Your Treatment Journey

  1. Consultation & Patch Test: Medical history, melanin reading (if required), and a small test spot to confirm safety and optimal settings.
  2. Treatment Session: Protective eyewear is provided. Your practitioner passes the handpiece over the area while the integrated cooling system keeps skin comfortable.
  3. Post-Treatment Care: Mild redness or swelling fades within hours. You can resume normal activities the same day.
  4. Maintenance & Review: We recommend a review 12 weeks after your last body session (6 weeks for face) to plan any top-ups.

Laser Hair Removal FAQs

Is there anything you should not do after laser hair removal?

After you have had laser hair removal, avoid doing any forms of physical exercise. You also need to avoid the sauna, steam room, and gym. In addition, you should make sure you don’t touch the area that has been treated either.

Do hairs fall out straight away?

For most people, the hair will start to fall out between five and 14 days after they have had the treatment.

Can I have laser hair removal every week?

The aim is to target the hair follicle during the growth cycle, which is why it is a good idea to space out the treatments a little bit. Your practitioner will make recommendations regarding this.

Will six laser hair removal treatments be enough?

In most cases, between six and eight treatments are going to be enough. However, everyone is different, which is why you need to consult an expert for a timeline.

How often should you have laser hair removal treatments on your face?

For facial hair, treatment is usually carried out every four to six weeks.

Should I shave before my laser hair removal?

It is advisable to shave before your laser hair removal treatment. This is because the laser needs to target the follicle of the hair, and so shaving assists with this. Not only is freshly shaved skin best in terms of the effectiveness of treatment, but the laser could also burn your skin if your hair is too long. This is why you don’t want hair above the skin, but you do want it in the follicle. Because of this, waxing is not recommended.

Are there any side effects for laser hair removal?

Most people do not experience any side effects as a consequence of laser hair removal. Nevertheless, all treatments do have some side effects, and so it is important to be aware of them. Most side effects are temporary and minor. Anyone who experiences lasting side effects should speak with their practitioner as soon as possible. Below are some of the side-effects that could arise:

A risk of skin infection
As is the case with all forms of cosmetic hair removal, there is the risk of an infection if you use a laser to damage hair follicles. The impacted area needs to be treated while the wound is healing. If you notice any signs of infection, give us a call and we will help. If an infection does arise, do not apply over-the-counter antibiotic creams to large areas of the skin. Instead, one of our practitioners will be able to recommend the right course of treatment should an infection arise, although this is very rare.

Changes in skin colour
Some people may notice small changes to the colour of their skin. It could get a little bit lighter or darker after their treatment. People with darker skin tones are more likely to experience lighter pigmentation changes, whereas those with lighter skin are more likely to experience darker pigmentation changes. The skin will return to normal over time.

Crusting
Some people may also experience skin crusting in the area that has been impacted. This can be inconvenient but it is a minor issue. It can sometimes cause scabbing. However, by using a moisturiser and taking care of the treated area, you can prevent any lasting problems in this regard.

Irritation and redness
Some people can experience a little bit of irritation and redness in the areas that have been impacted. The skin may feel tender or tingle. In some cases, it may appear to swell a little bit. The symptoms are typically short-lived. However, if they do persist, please get in touch with us as soon as possible.

Which laser hair removal is best in the UK?

Medical-grade lasers with single, precise wavelengths (not IPL) give the most reliable results. Cynosure Elite IQ, used at Omniya, combines Alexandrite and Nd:YAG wavelengths and a Skintel Melanin Reader for safe treatment on all skin tones, outperforming most single-platform lasers.

Can I get laser while pregnant or breastfeeding?

For safety, we postpone treatment until after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Does it hurt?

Most clients find it much less painful than waxing, describing a brief “snap” with a cooling sensation.

How often will I need top-ups?

After a full course, most people need one maintenance session every 6–12 months. Hormonal changes may require more.
