How laser hair removal works

17 October 2018 by Omniya Clinic

Laser hair removal is something we’re all familiar with, right? It zaps away unwanted body and facial hair for diminished hair growth, but how exactly does this zapping work? Starting your laser hair removal treatment in the autumnal and winter months is sensible if you’d like to be hair-free in your target areas by summer. Because multiple sessions will be needed spread over a few months, the colder months are the perfect opportunity to begin your treatment. But what does this treatment entail and how permanent is it?

Laser technology has been adapted and suited to cosmetic purposes for years now, and some of the latest is suitable even for use on the face. Laser hair treatment works by zapping the targeted areas multiple times with short bursts of concentrated light energy. This light energy is absorbed by the pigment in the active hair follicles, breaking them apart and disabling its ability to produce hair as quickly. After multiple treatments, some areas may stop producing hair altogether.

How permanent is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal can’t be said to permanently remove unwanted body and facial hair, but it does permanently reduce the growth of this hair. In some areas, follicles may be damaged enough to permanently stop producing hair, though it’s more likely that a positive reduction is seen. Most clients need a top-up appointment a few months after their treatment journey has finished, but this is entirely normal. It takes between 1-6 sessions at weekly-to-monthly intervals. Beginning your treatment journey in the colder months ensures a positive reduction in the treatment area by the time we’re welcoming summer again.

Is laser hair removal safe?

Laser hair removal is entirely safe, yes. There may be a little discomfort while you’re being treated. It has been likened to an elastic band being ‘pinged’ against your skin, but it should not be painful. We’ll provide you with protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the light and your treatment should run smoothly, especially in medically qualified hands. In order to keep your skin safe afterwards, its important you wear broad-spectrum sun protection because the treated area will be a little vulnerable and sensitive to the sun’s rays.

Laser hair removal side effects

Your treated area might be a little swollen and red over the days following your procedure. This is entirely natural. It is your skin’s inflammatory response to an outside stimulus, so you shouldn’t worry if you react this way. Using aloe vera gel, a cold compress, ice pack, or towel doused with cold water will soothe this irritation and calm your skin. As we mentioned before, sun protection is an absolute must to avoid any unwanted pigmentation changes and sun damage to your temporarily vulnerable skin. You should apply sun protection whenever you are exposed to its rays for at least a week.

Laser hair removal for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic ovary syndrome is thought to affect one in every five women in the UK; but with more than half of these women not experiencing symptoms. Polycystic ovaries contain a large number of harmless follicles that are underdeveloped sacs in which eggs develop. In PCOS, these sacs are often unable to release an egg, which means ovulation doesn’t take place. Irregular or no periods, excessive hair growth, acne, and weight gain are all symptoms associated with PCOS, which is why many women find relief in laser hair removal. Unwanted hair growth; on typically masculine areas of the body including the face, chest, back, and buttocks; can cause you to feel self-conscious, but laser hair removal is perfectly suitable for these areas.

Knightsbridge laser clinic offers a release from the traditional methods of hair removal. Waxing, shaving, and hair removal creams often require monthly, sometimes weekly maintenance with short-lived results.
