Post-Care Advice
Please be aware that the healed results of your treatment are entirely dependent on the condition of your skin and your diligent adherence to the aftercare instructions. If your skin is dehydrated, rough, sensitive, bleedy, thin, etc., optimal results may not be achieved.
Failure to follow the correct aftercare can lead to poor pigment retention or patchiness. Therefore, please ensure you are able to carefully follow the provided aftercare instructions.
What you may experience (first 4 days):
- Swelling and redness
- Tenderness
- Dry flaking skin as the lips heal
These symptoms are a normal part of the healing process. Do not itch, pick or touch the area as this can cause uneven healing and increase risk of infection.
Day of the procedure:
- Ice packs can be applied to the lips to reduce swelling and sensitivity
- Lightly pat the lips with damp cotton wool every hour
- Reapply HydraGel after each clean
Daily care for the first 7 days:
- Apply a very thin layer of healing balm if the lips look or feel dry
- Wipe the lips with antibacterial cleanser every evening
- Drink plenty of water
- Drink through a straw for the first week
- Avoid getting lips wet or submerged in water - if wet, dab dry and reapply balm
- Some itching is normal - do not pick, peel or rub
- Avoid skincare or beauty treatments for 5 days after application
- Do not apply makeup directly on the lips for 1 week
- No kissing for 5 days to prevent infection
- Avoid salty and spicy foods for 5 days
Avoid for 2 weeks:
- Exposure to direct sunlight
- Tanning treatments
- Jacuzzis, saunas, salt water, chlorinated pools
- Direct shower spray
- Lip plumping products
- Receiving lip filler or injections
Cold sore prevention:
- If you have a history of cold sores, use Zovirax 5 times a day for 1 week
- Aciclovir tablets can also be taken a few days before and during healing
Remember, your selected colour will be stronger and more sharply defined immediately after your treatment
What to expect during healing:
- Day 1–2: Colour will appear darker
- Day 2–5: Lips may itch and flakes of colour will come away - this is normal and will happen in patches
- After flaking: Colour may appear light; pigment will blossom over the next 4 weeks
- Week 4–6: Final external colour becomes visible
- Week 6+: Internal skin will be fully healed
Some unevenness of colour is normal after the first session. The control visit is essential to fine-tune your enhancement.
Long-Term Care
- Use a good SPF lip balm - sun exposure will fade the pigment
- If planning a chemical peel, laser treatment or MRI scan, inform the technician of your enhancement
- Inform the National Blood Service if donating blood - you may not be eligible to donate for 4 months post-treatment
Infection Control
Everything used during treatment is disposable and the room is disinfected after each client.
If you experience signs of infection (e.g. yellow oozing), this is likely due to poor aftercare. Please contact your GP immediately for antibiotics.
