SkinPen: Contraindications, Pre-Care and Post Care Instructions

Introduction

Welcome to Omniya Clinic’s guide to your SkinPen treatment. Below, you will find comprehensive contraindications, pre-care and post-care information for your treatment. If you have any questions, please contact our reception team who will be happy to assist you.

Medical History

If it is your first time seeing an aesthetician at Omniya Clinic please click here to fill out your Medical History Form in advance of your appointment.

Instructions:

Upon making an appointment, an account will be created for you. Please select 'Yes, I've already got a profile!' and then 'recover password' and you will receive an email to set a new password - please check your Spam/Junk folder.

Please note: If there are any medical changes or if you have been taking any new medication since the last time you visited us, please inform us before you attend the clinic to ensure you are still suitable to have the treatment.

Contraindications

This treatment may not be suitable if you are or have:

  • Pregnant &/or Nursing
  • Any open wounds or sores in the treatment area
  • Any current viral, bacterial, fungal or parasitic skin infections – including colds, conjunctivitis, sties and cold sores
  • Any lesions that are new and unexplained - check with GP
  • Any Keloid Scars in the treatment area or elsewhere on the face or body
  • Active Skin Cancer – Check with your GP. 1 year all clear required for Basal Cell Carcinoma (Rodent Ulcer) / 5 years all clear for Malignant Melanoma AND Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Any active cancer and under a consultant care – 5 years all clear required
  • Any bleeding disorders and dysfunction eg Haemophilia & Von Willebrand disease
  • Diabetes – Type 1 and type 2 patients on high medication are contraindicated
  • Taking any prescribed medications for blood thinning such as Heparin, warfarin & Aspirin (Anti-Coagulants)
  • Any Chronic Psoriasis, Eczema or other conditions in the treatment area or anywhere else - Note * chronic means life-long and severe. Note * Those who have mild and occasional issues can be treated
  • Current Severe Active Acne Vulgaris and Active Acne Rosacea (grade 3 and above)
  • Currently taking the drug Isotretinoin (Roaccutane) – 6 months non-usage required
  • Any Collagen vascular diseases – Scleroderma and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome
  • Allergies to Stainless steel
  • Recent sunburn – skin will need to be fully recovered

With courtesy the following conditions may limit or prevent treatment. Your consultation will determine your suitability.

  • Any Actinic Solar Keratosis –can be worked around but you may be referred to a GP & dermatologist prior to treatment
  • Any Raised moles in the treatment area – Can be worked around
  • History of Herpes Simplex – use of prophylactic anti-viral medication prior to treatment can be useful
  • Any Cardiac abnormalities
  • Immunosuppressive Therapy & autoimmune disorders– Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis, multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease - need letter from GP first to confirm treatment can go ahead
  • Diabetes - Dietary controlled or those taking lower dosage medications MAY be able to be treated, if good healing capacity can be established
  • Elected use of Aspirin – Could be treated – Medication should be ceased for 3-7 days prior to treatment if possible
  • History of mild Psoriasis & Eczema can be treated if it is not active and not present in the treatment area
  • Current Grade 1 & Grade 2 (Less severe) Acne Vulgaris and Acne Rosacea can be treated
  • History of contact dermatitis- Consultation will establish potential risk
  • Scars & stretch marks under a year old
  • History of Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation – If caused by any previous aesthetic skin treatment this may limit or prevent treatment
  • Allergies to topical anaesthetic - patch testing could be considered – and treatment parameters will be limited to low needle depth
  • Sun exposure – minimum of 24 hrs – 1 week pre & post procedure
  • Any other medical conditions or medications not mentioned- please discuss with your practitioner to ascertain if treatment is safe

Pre Treatment Instructions

Please:

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure a week prior to the procedure.
  • Stop using any active skin care such as retinol, glycolic/salicylic acids 48 hours before the procedure
  • Stop using prescription grade skincare such as topical tretinoin a week before the procedure.
  • Stop using any topical medication such as steroids within the treated area(s) a week before the procedure.
  • To avoid any advanced facial skin treatment or laser treatment in the treated area(s) for the last 4 weeks.
  • To avoid any injectable treatments in the past 2 weeks.
  • To avoid waxing/threading/depilatory creams on the treated area(s) in the last 2 weeks.
  • To avoid application of any self tan/spray tan in the area(s) of treatment. This includes tanning moisturisers.

Please also note:

  • Shaving is not recommended on the day of treatment; shave 24 hours prior
  • Pigment may darken prior to lightening

Post Treatment Instructions & Expectations

Please:

  • Do not touch the area without cleaning your hands first.
  • Do not pick any peeling skin, this can lead to post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Allow the skin to slough off naturally.
  • Do not apply any skincare including SPF other than the SkinFuse products your practitioner has given you for the next 48 hours – “Lift HG” for the first 24 hours and “Rescue” during the following 24 hours. Use lukewarm water to rinse the skin with if needed
  • Do not apply any skincare actives such as retinol, glycolic acid for 5 days.
  • Do not apply any prescription grade skincare such as tretinoin/hydroquinone for 1 week.
  • Do not apply make-up for 48 hours. After that, mineral make-up is advised, applied with clean brushes.
  • Do not apply spray tanning/self tan for 1 week.
  • Avoid any excessive heat on the treated areas such as a hot bath/shower, sauna/steam room for 72 hours.
  • Do not have any other skin treatments such as facials, laser on the treated area(s) for 4 weeks.
  • Do not have any injectable treatments for 2 weeks.
  • Do not wax or thread the treated area(s) for 2 weeks.
  • Avoid intensive exercise/swimming for 5 days.
  • Avoid sun exposure for 1 week post treatment. Ensure you wear SPF 50 at all times after the 48 hour period.

Cancellations

If you need to rearrange or cancel your appointment for any reason, we operate with a 48 hour cancellation policy, therefore we kindly ask you to inform us within 2 working days if you are unable to attend your appointment.
